Το ρόδι συμβολίζει την ευτυχία,τους χυμούς του έρωτα αλλά και την αιωνιότητα. Το κόκκινο σχετίζεται με την γέννηση και το θάνατο και είναι ένδειξη μετακίνησης από το ένα σταδιο της ζωής στο επόμενο. Σύμφωνα με τον ομηρικό ύμνο η αρπαγή της Περσεφόνης από τον Πλούτωνα, θεό του Αδη έφερε απελπισία στη μητέρα της θεά Δήμητρα που για να εκδηλώσει το θυμό της δεν άφηνε να φυτρώσει τίποτα πάνω στη γη, φέρνοντας μια εποχή ξηραςίας και λοιμών. Ο Δίας πείθει τον Αδη να αφήσει την Περσοφόνη αλλά εκείνος πριν την επανοδό της στο επανω κόσμο της δίνει να φάει σπόρους ροδιού,ώστε να εξασφαλίσει την επιστροφή της. Ετσι τον μισό χρόνο ηταν στον Αδη και τον υπολοιπο με την μητέρα της, όταν πια άνθιζε η γη και όλα τα δέντρα.Αυτός είναι και ο διαρκής κύκλος της ζωής από τον μαρασμό και το πένθος της άγονης γης στη βλάστηση και την καρποφορία.
The pomegranate symbolizes happiness, the love juices, and, yet eternity. The color red pertains to nascence and demise, indicating the transaction from one state to another. According to the Homeric legend, Persephone’s abduction by Pluto, the god of Hades brought despair to her mother, the goddess Demeter, who, in an act of rage, forbade anything to grow on earth, sanctioning, thus, a period of drought and plagues. Zeus induces Hades to let Persephone out, yet, just before her ascent to the world above, he gives her to eat seeds of pomegranate to ensure her recursion. Hence, Persephone spent half of her time with Hades, while the other half with her mother, when the earth was budding and the trees were burgeoning. This is the perpetual cycle of life- from doldrums and the mourning of the barren earth to the sprouting and bearing fruits.
